It has got louder
A sudden increase in engine noise, or a droning or roaring sound, often means a joint or section has started to blow. This is the most common sign and worth acting on quickly.
Rattles and knocks
A rattle under the car, especially over bumps, can be a loose heat shield or a failed bracket letting the exhaust move around. Easy to fix early, messier if ignored.
Hissing, smells or poor performance
A hissing sound can indicate a crack or leak, and a smell of fumes should never be ignored. A blocked or leaking exhaust can also make the car feel sluggish and use more fuel.
