Tyre tread depth: the UK legal limit explained

Your tyres are the only part of your car that touches the road, and the tread is what clears water and grips in the wet. Here is what the UK law requires and how to check your own tyres in a minute.

The legal minimum is 1.6mm

In the UK, car tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, all the way around. Below that it is illegal, an MOT failure, and you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre.

The 20p test

Take a 20p coin and push it into the main tread grooves. If the outer band of the coin is hidden by the tread, you are likely above the legal limit. If you can see the band, your tread may be too low and it is time to get the tyre checked.

Why 3mm is a better target

Grip in the wet falls away sharply well before a tyre reaches 1.6mm. Many safety experts suggest replacing tyres at around 3mm rather than waiting for the legal limit, especially for winter driving. If you are not sure, call in and we will check your tread for free.
